Meetings are held virtually via Zoom for the time being.

Our regular meetings are on the  1nd, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 7pm to 9pm PDT (-7GMT), with the exception of December due to the Holidays. Guests are always welcome.

Last Meeting Reflections with Dale Wallace

A funny thing happened on the way to the toastmaster’s meeting. I got all ready for it. I made these great handouts for people. There were pictures and notes and my excitement all down on the pages. At 5:45 I gathered up the handouts and headed for Yvonne’s house. Along the way I stopped and bought 6 Sneaky Weasel beer. Sneak Weasel is my favorite brand, and I was happy to share with people. I pulled up in front on Yvonne’s at about 6:50 and there was parking right in front of the place. Wow I thought, I’m, lucky. I grabbed my handouts and beer and headed for the back yard. There was nobody in the back yard. Hum, I’m early I thought. After calling a hello in Yvonne’s back door she appeared, and I announced I was here for the meeting. She told me it was on line. OMG. However, Yvonne, always the gracious host, invited me to stay and we both attended the meeting via her computer. 

Thankfully, the meeting went off without a hitch. I had done enough hitching for the night. 

The theme of the meeting was “Goals, goals, goals!” and I think I had better make a goal of getting my act together and read the emails and agenda closer  

One of the highlights of the night was the educational portion of the meeting. In meetings there will be some time devoted to education for the members. Robert’s Rules of Order were reviewed by Julie B. and Leah. It was done in a very creative way by Julie and Leah having a conversation about the rules to explain them to us. 

I know I mention it almost every time, but I cannot stress enough the politeness and overall good feelings that is present in the meeting. I’m sure many of you have been to some kind of meeting where there were problems and hurt feeling or people simply fell asleep. This is not, or has never been, the case for the Ambassadors meetings. People have fun and learn things. They are engaged and happy. It’s because of the members that this culture has been created and maintained. Each of you can be proud of your contribution. 

There were three speeches this night. Yvonne spoke about an upcoming family reunion. She spoke with enthusiasm and humor, but Yvonne’s underlying anxiety about the reunion was present too. Her family had not slept under the same roof for 40 years, and she was dearly hoping all will go well. Most of us know that staying with family can be a challenge. There are usually strong personalities and sometimes the personalities clash; on the other hand, a reunion can we one of the most wonderful and memorable events of a person’s life. We’ll have to hear Yvonne’s report after the long weekend. 

Connor spoke about the importance of goals. And it is obvious that setting, working towards, and achieving goals is extremely important part of Connor’s life. Connor is a wonderful example for us all. He shared his goals and what he is doing to achieve them. Connor has set himself up for tremendous success in life and we all can learn from him. Plus, we saw in front of our eyes Connor achieving his goals. With his speech, he completed level 1 of Presentation Mastery. He will be getting the illustrious golden bunny next meeting. 

Dale (me) delivered a speech about the difference between artistic thinking a scientific thinking and used examples from Connor’s and Yvonne’s life to show how they are artists. In fact, every person is an artist. When you work to improve or to try things differently or put your own stamp onto certain things, you are using artistic thinking. So we are all artists, it’s just our mediums that are different. 

It seemed at the end of the meeting that one goal that we can all work to accomplish at toastmasters is to be cognizant to time. We are allotted certain amount of time to do our introductions and speeches and it is best we stick to them or our meetings will tend to run too long. 

Note to self: the next meeting is July 27^th at Yvonne’s. It’s the 20th year anniversary for the club. It is an important milestone indeed. All come out, with some snacks and drinks, and celebrate together.  

On June 20^th Leah, Julie B, Samuel, and Dale attended, via zoom, the Vancouver Speakers and Leaders club Table Topics Summit. Barb was there in the capacity of a judge. The UBC toastmasters club was there too, and because of that there was a notably less amount of grey hair. The highlight of the night was when Julie announced we were stealing the banner of Vancouver Speakers and Leaders club.  There was a bit of a complaint that the banner supposedly couldn’t be stolen at a special event, but in the end Vancouver heartily accepted our thievery. But expect them at our next meeting to steal it back. 

The swiping of the banner was quite appropriate as several of the Ambassadors dressed up as pirates to attend the meeting. And what do pirates love to do besides saying “aaarrr”? Sinking ships, general plundering, and, most importantly, stealing booty! I believe that banner is in a treasure chest buried somewhere on Centennial beach! 

The next meeting is at Yvonne’s house in her back yard on July 27 at 7:00 pm

Congratulations to Our 2021 Area 40 Speech Contest Winners!

On Saturday, February 13, 2021, the Ambassadors swept the top spots at the Area 40 International Speech contest and the Evaluation contest. Our members Barb Westlake and Yvonne Anderson both advance to the Division E Evaluation contest on March 6, 2021, and Yvonne Anderson and Katherine Praski both advance for the International Speech contest. Congratulations to our members! If you want to see the excellence that this club has to offer, come on our and experience their winning speeches live on the Division E Zoom stage.

A New Year's Resolution you will want to make

Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Toastmasters is more that just a Toastmasters club. As Katherine Praski so eloquently puts it:

I first joined Toastmasters 8 years ago when I had two kids 2 and under and I felt like I was losing my ability to form sentences comprised of more than 3 words. I came to keep my mind sharp and escape every conversation in my life being centred around diapers and sleep cycles, but I have stayed because of quality of friendships I have made. Over the years, the Ambassadors have shared in both my joys and my sorrows. I have got to know so many people from very different walks of life in a very intimate way because Toastmasters gives us a platform to share thoughts, stories and life lessons in a way you are rarely afforded in life. While I have grown in skill tremendously, I am most deeply blessed by the knowledge that I have these AMAZING people in my corner cheering me on - propelling me forward...always encouraging me and equipping me to be Best version of myself. Thanks Ambassadors for being such a phenomenal club. I truly cherish you all... past members and present.

Rebecca's Story

Being a new member of an established club can be terrifying. In her own words, here is Rebecca's story of attending one of the Ambassador's Autumn socials, where members become friends and family...

I was petrified: my palms were sweating. My feet felt heavy, as if I were dragging them through knee high sludge. Perhaps I could make up a reason to delay attending a meeting by just one more week? Having social anxiety and joining a club terrified me, and yet I followed through. I had been in contact with Barb for a few months via email and finally made time in my schedule to attend Toastmasters as a guest. Despite being extremely nervous I really enjoyed the meeting and was delighted at how welcoming the Ambassadors are!

The week following my first meeting there was a night off in the Ambassadors’ schedule. Paula, our VP of education, invited us all into her home for a dream board social. Having just signed up as a member I felt it would be a good opportunity to get to know the Ambassadors. 

Upon the evening of the dream board social I once again felt nervous. Once I walked in the door I was cheerfully welcomed. I had conversations with many of the members, and we shared stories and laughter. I quickly felt at ease as I connected with this group of people. Creating dream boards is certainly in alignment with the theme of the club, and it was also a way catch a glimpse at the lives, hopes, and dreams of those around me. Each of us has joined toastmasters for slightly different reasons, but mainly it is to grow as individuals. A group of like minded people who join together and lift each other up: that is a true representation of a great community. 

Had I not attended this social I would feel less comfortable giving speeches before this group. Getting to know the individuals on a more personal level at events outside of structured meetings is an excellent way to form bonds with fellow members. Though I still feel anxious about public speaking, each week I look forward to seeing this wonderful group of people.

Ambassadors becomes one of only 3 clubs in District 21 to win the Smedley Award for achieving 5 new members between August 1, 2019, to September 30, 2019.

At Ambassadors, one of our favourite events of the year is our annual Pub Night. In 2019, we had a very successful Pub Night in February to celebrate Toastmasters months. We hope to see you at our next one this coming February!

Two members from the Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters recently competed in the Division E Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest September 27^th at the Steveston Community Centre. Treasurer Barb Westlake competed in the Table Topics contest, while VP of Membership Greg Smith competed in the humorous speech portion of the evening with his “My Wife Makes Me Laugh” speech. Leah Cheyne, Division F Director and Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills member, posed the following question to the Table Topics contestants, "Mark Twain once said, "Laughter is man's best defense against the inhumanities of mankind. Is there a time when laughter saved you? Congratulations go to Barb Westlake, who placed first and advanced to compete in the Toastmasters District 21 Table Topics Contest Finals held at the end of October in Victoria. The Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters are pleased that two of its members advanced to the Division E level of the competition and congratulate both Barb and Greg on their participation.
